Brian’s Oaxaca Old-Fashioned

This cocktail hits the right balance of winter escapism while still paying respect to the deeper earthy wood and fire qualities associated with the colder season.

Oaxaca Old-Fashioned

Ingredients

  • 1½ ounces Reposado tequila
  • ½ ounce mezcal
  • 1 teaspoon agave nectar
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • Strip of orange peel with pith, 1 inch wide
Note: Technically, tequila is a mezcal. For the purposes of this recipe, mezcal should have a distinct smokey flavour. Look for mezcal made with the blue agave plant – preferably of Mexican origin and bottling.

Instructions

Step 1

Combine liquids in a cocktail mixing pitcher with a generous handful of ice. Stir until well chilled (generally 20+ stirs; use the long handle of a fork in a pinch). Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice.

Step 2

Hold a lighted match over the drink in one hand. In the other hand, hold the orange peel with the orange side facing the flame, about an inch away. Carefully and quickly squeeze the orange peel until oils spark. Put out the match and drop the peel into the cocktail. (While one might want to skip this cocktail-making flair as inconsequential showmanship, upon practice its effect will most certainly become part of your cocktail repertoire.)
